We have been home for a few days now, and I am aready jonesing for another vacation.

I wish I could put into words just how awesome our South Dakota road trip was. 11 days. 14 states. 4666.8 miles. 6 campgrounds. 1 hotel. 2 family visits. 2 friend visits. 1 night sleeping in the car. Scranton. Toledo. Chicago. Madison. Soux Falls. Mitchell. Wall. The Badlands. Rapid City. The Black Hills. Jewel Caves. Omaha. Kansas City. St Louis. Home.

It sounds cliche, but I have never felt as free as I did when we were on the open road. Just me and Jesse and thousands of miles of things we had never seen before. The morning after we camped at Custer State Park, I showered and we hit the road early. I have never felt as clean and content as I did that morning.

The trip made me feel small. There is so much to see, so much to do, so many people, and so much nature that is bigger and more extreme than anything we could create ourselves. We saw storms that dwarf our New England thunder storms. Bugs the size of cell phones. Hills, mountains, caves that make cities feel small and strange.

Even writing about it makes it seem trite.

I’m ready to go back on the road.
